Reading your IPF GL score
Your score measures strength relative to bodyweight. It is normalized against elite IPF world record performances. A score of 100 represents a world-class level.
A higher score means stronger performance for your size. Most competitive lifters at local meets score between 55 and 75. National-level athletes typically sit between 75 and 90.
Track it after each training block. A rising score means your total is growing faster than your bodyweight. That is the direction you want.
Which lifts count
The IPF GL calculator uses your three competition lifts combined into a total.
Each lift adds to your total. That total, combined with your bodyweight and sex, produces the score. A weak lift in any of the three pulls your results down.
IPF GL vs other scoring systems
IPF GL Points are one of several systems powerlifting uses to compare athletes across weight classes.
| System | Used by |
|---|---|
| IPF GL Points | IPF, USAPL, British Powerlifting, all IPF affiliates |
| DOTS | USPA, WRPF, most non-IPF federations. Try the DOTS Calculator → |
| Wilks | World Powerlifting, Powerlifting Australia |
All three adjust for bodyweight to level the field between lighter and heavier lifters. Which one applies depends on your federation. IPF GL is the official standard for over 100 national federations under the IPF umbrella.
FAQ
What are IPF GL Points?
IPF GL Points are the official bodyweight-adjusted scoring system of the International Powerlifting Federation. They compare performances across all weight classes on a single scale.
What is a good IPF GL score?
A score above 70 is advanced. Above 85 is elite in raw drug-tested competition. World-class performers at IPF World Championships typically exceed 100.
Are IPF Points and IPF GL Points the same?
No, IPF points were used from 2019 to May 2020. IPF GL Points replaced them in May 2020 and remain the current official system.
Do I need all three lifts?
Yes. The formula requires a valid squat, bench press, and deadlift total. A missing lift means no valid score.
Can I use pounds?
Yes. Select pounds before entering your values. Every input must use the same unit.
Does bodyweight affect my score?
Yes. Bodyweight is built directly into the formula. Two lifters with the same total but different bodyweights will score differently.
Why is my IPF GL score different from my DOTS score?
The two formulas use different scales. IPF GL scores for competitive lifters typically range from 55 to 100. DOTS scores for the same lifters typically range from 300 to 500. They are not comparable numbers.
